American International Innovative Design Award 2024

City Crossing · Runfu

The project spans three levels—upper, middle, and lower—integrating functions such as exhibition, entertainment, hospitality, and recreational activities. The overall area combines vintage grandeur with modern restraint, perfectly echoing Shanghai’s spirit of “embracing all rivers, integrating diverse elements.” It silently conveys the luxurious elegance inherent in Shanghainese style.

The reception desk stands gracefully like a gentleman, welcoming guests. The metal grilles and gold foil silk wall coverings form the first luxurious visual focal point of the interior, sketching a uniquely charming temporal ambiance.

The black wrought iron staircase, imbued with vintage memories, contrasts beautifully with the patterned stone flooring, showcasing the unique modernity and style of “Haipai” culture. As guests ascend the spiral staircase, they experience the space’s charm from every angle through the turns, progressions, stops, and pauses. The staircase itself becomes a distinctive scenic element.

The second-floor platform interweaves within the space, creating a corresponding vantage point above the double-height reception area. A small curved balcony allows the interplay of solid and void spaces from various perspectives. Time is condensed and folded, with vintage sentiments accompanying the ever-moving footsteps, linking to the glorious past.

The approximately 1500-square-meter B1 level leisure club is designed to offer guests a versatile and flexible space where they can enjoy wine tasting, tea brewing, flower viewing, rain listening, swimming, fitness, rest, and social interaction. After completion, it will also serve as a communal clubhouse for future residents of the community.

Lighting is a crucial medium for conveying spatial emotions. As visual focal points shift, the interplay of light creates a narrative-rich ambiance. Behind the vintage-style shutters, red velvet drapes decorate the walls, perfectly blending softness and rigidity with their sturdy backing.

As the hallmark of this upscale residential clubhouse, the pool’s ceiling and textured wall paint reflect the shimmering water surface. Natural light is borrowed from the intersection of horizontal and vertical planes, merging the forces of art and nature. The space reveals its soft tranquility under the blessing of natural light.

The flowing archways, evolved from some of the original load-bearing columns, transform the unavoidable structural elements into distinctive arcades. This creates another memorable feature of the project. While establishing a sense of sequence and rhythm around the pool, it also encourages relaxation and immersion in the space.

The exquisite handcrafted rattan hanging chairs and the soft lighting add rich layers to the language of the free and relaxed space. In the interplay of light and shadow, the night flows freely like water, yet is full of vitality, allowing the serene spatial rhythm to slowly unfold.
